Guidelines for Disagreement

Some time back I came across this post by Dr. Kenneth Keathley, When Writing about Those With Whom You Disagree.

His rules:

1) Describe your opponent’s position in such a way that he can recognize it,

2) Know your opponent’s position well enough that you could argue it for him,

and

3) Write as if your opponent and you were going to dinner after you finish.

Of course this is easier said than done, but these are rules I hope to follow in my own writing. Having read Dr. Keathley’s book Salvation and Sovereignty, I can say he practices what he preaches. If you can stay within these guidelines while writing about the sovereignty/free will debate, you have done well!

You can read the entire post at Theology For The Church.
