To Him be Glory and Power Forever!

Conclusion from John Chrysostom’s Easter Sermon:

Christ is Risen, and you, o death, are annihilated!
Christ is Risen, and the evil ones are cast down!
Christ is Risen, and the angels rejoice!
Christ is Risen, and life is liberated!
Christ is Risen, and the tomb is emptied of its dead;
for Christ having risen from the dead,
is become the first-fruits of those who have fallen asleep.

To Him be Glory and Power forever and ever. Amen!

John Chrysostom (Bishop of Constantinople, 400 A. D.)

    • That’s an interesting question. I suspect that the translation from Greek makes it somewhat ambiguous. Another version I came across this morning has, “you are cast down,” which seems to be a more accurate translation.

      • I like the imagery of death being swallowed up in these two verses:

        He will swallow up death forever; and the Lord GOD will wipe away tears from all faces, and the reproach of his people he will take away from all the earth, for the LORD has spoken. -Isaiah 25:8

        When the perishable puts on the imperishable, and the mortal puts on immortality, then shall come to pass the saying that is written: “Death is swallowed up in victory.” -Cor 15:54
