Holiness vs. Happiness

“God just wants me to be happy.”

I hear this statement all too often. The only thing is, it’s inaccurate at best and incorrect at worst. God is more interested in our holiness than our happiness.

But does that mean God wants us to be unhappy? No. The way of holiness is the way to happiness.

We were created in God’s image,

therefore,

Our lives function best when we act in accordance with the nature and character of God.

By His nature, God is holy,

therefore,

Our lives function best when we act in acccordance with the holiness of God.

The law of God (His commandments) is the expression of His holy nature,

therefore,

Our lives function best when we obey God’s commandments.

Conclusion:

Obedience to God’s commands is for our benefit.
What is for His glory is for our good.
The way of Holiness is the way to Happiness.

  1. I think that happiness is an external thing while holiness is internal and the two are not always linked closely in the short term. But the long term is something different all together!
