Weapon of Mass Destruction or Universal Health Care?

This is the age of the put-down. It is a time of the knock, the insult, and the sneer. Sarcasm is the lingua franca of modern society. And, of course, it’s all good because we get a laugh afterward. Think it inappropriate? Prude. Feelings hurt? Quit being overly sensitive. I can cover my cruel and insulting attitude in camouflage of humor.

The problem is, people do get hurt. Oh, they may not show it on the outside, but it hurts. Remember the old adage, “Sticks and stones may break my bones, but words can never hurt me”? Wrong. Words hurt. And the reckless use of them is like piercing someone with a sword. Careless. Reckless. Rash and inconsiderate. An uncontrolled tongue is like a toddler with an UZI. It can cause unbelievable damage while remaining completely oblivious. How great a matter a little fire kindles.

It is wisdom that speaks words that heal. And a well spoken word can be like a soothing balm to the soul. Encouragement for the discouraged. Hope for the fearful. Peace for the disturbed. Grace for the needy.

Are my words hurtful or healthful? Do I wield them like a sword, or administer them like a medicine? Will they tear down, or will they build up?

“Let your speech be always with grace.” Speak “that which is good to the use of edifying, that it may minister grace to the hearer.”

Kind words may not be cool, but they are something far better. They are wise.

  1. We seem to have lost the ability to ourselves in the shoes of another and to consider how our actions will affect them. As long as we get a laugh or feel like we’ve somehow ‘won’ ahead of another, how it touches their life doesn’t matter.

When we look at shows like ‘Idol’ we see some terrible auditions and love to laugh at the expense of the person auditioning. What we forget is that the person has already auditioned to producers who have purposely chosen them to appear in front of the judges on television simply so that we can have a cheap laugh and feel superior.
