These pictures are impressive and are a reminder of how minute the earth is in comparison to the vastness of the universe.
While certainly amazing, they impress me more with the Maker of the universe than the universe itself. The immensity of the universe should point us to Christ. It magnifies
- Christ’s Strength
As big as this universe is, the God who created it is bigger. All things were made by Him (John 1:3a). By Him were all things created that are in heaven (Colossians 1:16a). By Him God made the worlds (Hebrews 1.2b).
- His Sovereignty
All these stars, galaxies, and planets exist simply by the sovereign will and power of Christ. He upholds all this immensity with the word of His power (Hebrews 1:3c) and by Him all things consist (Colossians 1:17).
- His Salvation
The minuteness of our planet overwhelms me with the smallness of man and the graciousness of God. What is man that you are mindful of him? (Psalm 8.4) That God would send His Son to a tiny manger in a small village in a little country on a unremarkable planet in an ordinary solar system that is part of an insignificant galaxy in this extraordinary universe magnifies the truth of the Gospel!
No wonder the Psalmist said, “The heavens declare the glory of God!” So marvel at the creation as you look at these pictures, but marvel more at the greatness and grace of the Creator.
